PHILADELPHIA — The Eagles had the ball, a chance to win, and the same familiar thought Sunday, the one they have kept fresh for 11 seasons.
Just give David Akers a chance.
Ten plays later, Akers was two-hand pointing to the sky, fireworks were shooting from the Linc’s roof, the Eagles had a 27-24 lead and the Washington Redskins were about done. This time, it was a 32-yard game-winner from the runaway leading scorer in the history of the franchise, his fourth field goal of the game.
It was also another vital contribution to his comeback season.
In a game where the Birds could afford little to go sideways, Akers was close to perfect. He went 4-for-4 in field goal attempts and mixed in a PAT, 13 points overall —- and one additional point made.
He is back.
“I thought I did fine last year,” he said with shrug.
Not really —- not by his budding Hall of Fame standards, anyway. “I understand,” he said.
