Attended Aberdeen Central High School in South Dakota where he lettered 4 times in football, hockey, and track. As a senior, Mehlhaff was rated as the top prep kicker in the nation. Named All-State as a kicker and All-Conference as a quarterback his senior season. Also punted and played safety for Aberdeen. He earned All-State Academic team recognition. His parents are Charlie Mehlhaff and Heidi Preston. His father ran track and played golf at Northern State. Mehlhaff’s major was agricultural business management.

Named Special Teams Player of the Year after both his junior and season seasons at Wisconsin. Honored as a first-team All-American and selected as first-team All-Big Ten after his senior season. Taylor was named the teams’ Special Teams Player of the Year after both his junior and season seasons. Led the Badgers in scoring his senior season, racking up 105 points – the in a single season for a kicker in school history en route to being named a semi-finalist for the Lou Groza award for the nation’s top place kicker. Was a semi-finalist for the Groza award as a junior and named second-team All-Big Ten as the Badger’s number 2 scorer.
